וַיַּ֣ךְ אֶת־מוֹאָ֗ב וַֽיְמַדְּדֵ֤ם בַּחֶ֙בֶל֙ הַשְׁכֵּ֣ב אוֹתָ֣ם אַ֔רְצָה וַיְמַדֵּ֤ד שְׁנֵֽי־חֲבָלִים֙ לְהָמִ֔ית וּמְלֹ֥א הַחֶ֖בֶל לְהַחֲי֑וֹת וַתְּהִ֤י מוֹאָב֙ לְדָוִ֔ד לַעֲבָדִ֖ים נֹשְׂאֵ֥י מִנְחָֽה׃
און ער האָט געשלאָגן מואָבֿ, און האָט זײ געמאָסטן מיט אַ שנור, זײ אױסלײגנדיק אױף דער ערד; און ער האָט אָפּגעמאָסטן צװײ שנורן צו טײטן, און אײן פֿולע שנור צו לאָזן לעבן. און מואָבֿ איז געװאָרן צו דָוִדן קנעכט װאָס ברענגען אָפּגאָב.

When they came to R. Simeon they told him what had happened. He was greatly astonished, and said: ‘This is indeed excellent, but he will not make a name. When a thin stick burns it burns only for a little time.’

It is written, “His seed shall be mighty upon earth, the generation of the upright shall be blessed” (Ps. 112, 2). When a man is mighty on the earth, mighty in the Torah and in control of his passions, then his light goes forth and is continued through many generations.’
